Last weekend, during my pop-up at The Stylist in Zug, I invited visitors to participate in a brief experiment. I called it the 60-Second Neural Reset.
The setup was simple: sit down, close your eyes, and put on a pair of noise-canceling headphones. I applied HEAD start to the back of their hand, and for sixty seconds (extending up to four minutes for many), they listened to Poa Alpina by Biosphere.
I watched as facial tensions dissolved and breathing patterns shifted. But this wasn’t just "relaxation." It was a calculated biological intervention. Here is the science behind why this specific combination of scent, skin, and sound acts as a physical reset button for your brain.
1. The Olfactory Shortcut: Direct Access to the Limbic System
Smell is the only sense with a "backstage pass" to the brain. While sight and touch must be processed through the thalamus, scent molecules travel directly to the olfactory bulb, which is physically hardwired into the limbic system - the oldest, most primitive part of the brain responsible for memory, emotion, and survival.
By inhaling the concentrated Peppermint and Eucalyptus in HEAD start, you are bypassing your conscious, "thinking" brain. The scent triggers an immediate shift in the autonomic nervous system, moving you out of the fight-or-flight (tension) state and into a rest-and-reset state. It utilizes your "scent memory" to anchor a feeling of cold, open space, overriding the claustrophobic sensation of a headache.
2. The Dermal Pathway: TRPM8 and the "Flash Chill"
HEAD start is formulated as a high-potency spirit, not a lotion. When applied to the skin, two things happen simultaneously:
-
Vasodilation & Blood Flow: The essential oils, particularly Peppermint and Rosemary, act as local vasodilators. They increase micro-circulation at the application site, helping to clear the stagnation that often accompanies tension.
- Receptor "Shock": The menthol in our formula activates TRPM8 receptors - the "cold" sensors in your skin. Because of our fast-evaporating spirit base, this creates a "flash chill" that sends a high-priority signal to the brain. In the hierarchy of the nervous system, cold signals outrank pain signals. Your brain effectively "mutes" the headache to pay attention to the cold.
3. The Auditory Anchor: Biosphere and the Alpine Reset
The musical choice was deliberate. Poa Alpina by Biosphere is a masterpiece of ambient "Arctic" sound. It is a piece of music without a standard beat, it is spacious, cold, and slow-moving.
When you pair the thermal chill of HEAD start on your skin with the auditory chill of Biosphere, you are performing a "multi-modal sensory override."
Your skin feels the cold.
Your nose smells the alpine air.
Your ears hear the vast, glacial space.
Your brain can no longer maintain the "story" of the tension in your temples or neck. It is forced to recalibrate to this new, immersive environment.
Why It Works
A headache or chronic tension is often a "loop". A cycle of pain that creates stress, which in turn creates more pain. To break a loop, you need a powerful enough distraction to force a system reboot.
By engaging the oldest part of the brain (olfaction), the nervous system's priority receptors (thermal cold), and the auditory processing centers simultaneously, the Neural Reset provides a clean break. For sixty seconds, your biology is given a different set of data to process. When you take the headphones off, the loop has been broken, and the "reset" is complete.
Experience the reset for yourself. You don't need a pop-up in Zug, you just need a bottle of HEAD start and a minute of silence.
